Let’s Get Your House in Shape!

While we’re gearing up for the Spring Season here at Cutting Edge, we know that our customers are focusing on the exterior of their house. Along with our premium painting services, we also handle all carpentry repairs to meet your home’s needs. We know that it can be overwhelming to understand what the issues are in your house to get it ready for painting, so today we’re talking about the top 3 problem areas that we frequently come across.

Wood Rot:

Wood rot happens often and quickly when the wood on a home hasn’t been properly sealed and painted. If left unattended, water can infiltrate through the smallest crack, seam or hole and start breaking down the wood from the inside out.  The areas this usually affects are:

  • Fascia  & soffit boards
  • Window casing trim (Brick mold)
  • Window sills
  • Door frames
  • Siding boards.

Cracking and Peeling

With the wide span of temperatures Georgia sees in a given year combined with the high humidity,  cracking and peeling can happen for many reasons and cause water to enter, quickly causing issues. Cracking and peeling can happen for few different reasons:

  • If a low grade paint product is used, the coating can quickly lose its bond and elasticity.
  • If the surface isn’t properly prepared before being painted a proper bond won’t be possible.
  • Wear and tear happens with age of the paint with it becoming brittle over time.

Time

The last big issue we see is when a house has simply been left unattended for too long. A lot of people make the mistake of waiting until they start seeing damages to the house, or until the HOA calls before starting to think of repainting.

A good paint job can last as long as 8 to 9 years before needing a repaint, however, depending on certain factors a paint job could also only last a few years. High sun exposure, low sun exposure (causing moisture retention), low-quality paint, and even deep based colors (with lower Light Reflection Value or “LRV”) can accelerate paint breakdown.

A few things to look out for in determining whether or not your house is ready for a repaint are:

  • Cracking around window & door casings
  • Split seams at siding boards or other joints
  • Fading of color or chalky look to surface
  • Flaking or cracking of paint
